Jardin de Seattle à Nantes

Our colleagues in Nantes are creating a garden to celebrate our twinning. In Parc du Grand Blottereau, Nantes' largest park, a new area will be created, in the form of a nourishing forest. The thematic focus on an edible and mainly fruit garden is linked to the importance of fruit production in the Seattle area and, more broadly, in Washington State. The fruit forest concept was inspired by the Beacon Food Forest created by Seattle residents. This innovative form of permaculture will be the first of its kind in Nantes. In addition to fruit plants, the food forest will feature plants native to the Seattle area that are used in the traditional way of life by the indigenous people of Washington State, particularly the Coast Salish people.

Seattle artist, Barbara Earl Thomas, has been chosen to create a work of art that will be emblematic of the Jardin de Seattle section of Parc du Grand Blottereau.

Ray Larson, Associate Director, Curator of Living Collections and the Otis Douglas Hyde Herbarium at University of Washington Botanic Gardens graciously provided consultation on native plants and plants typical of Seattle gardens.

Inauguration of the Jardin de Seattle will be September, 2025. Watch this page for photographs of the work in progress!
